According to the

census, Iran's
population is over
67,017,860. The area of
the country is 1,648,195
square km while on
average about 37 persons
live per square km.
The most populated province of the country is Tehran with some 346 persons living per square km, while Semnan is the least populated area with some 5 persons living per square km. The sample census in 2001 suggests that Iran's population is currently over 64 million. Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tabriz, Rasht, Ahwaz, and Kermanshah are among the most populated provinces of the country. count conducted in 1996,
some 8.7 million
citizens of the republic
migrated from their
cities and villages to
other parts of the
country between 1986 and
1996. Some 36.58 percent
of the said figure
migrated to areas nearby
their original place of
residence while others
migrated to more remote
areas of the country.
Most of the migrants
have settled in the
provinces of Tehran,
Isfahan, Khuzestan, and
Qom. The highest number
of migrants is from the
provinces of East
Azarbaijan, Kermanshah,
Lorestan, and Ardabil.
Currently, some 2.8
million foreign
immigrants also live in

Currently a variety of domestic and international postal services are offered
in the country. In 1997, the country's postal system handled some 12 million
letters and parcels with a foreign origin, 7 million letters and parcels with a
foreign destination as well as 25 million domestic letters and parcels.
The post services are carried out by the government (as one of the companies under supervision of the Ministry of Communication and Information) and private sectors in Iran. The post system of Iran is linked to almost all points of the world. The post offices are indicated by a yellow signboard everywhere in the country. The post service is available in three forms of airmail, Pishtaz (similar to DHL) and Normal. All the post tariffs are the same for Iranians and foreigners and paid in Rials. In order to boost up the process of postal services, Postal Areas have been planned in Iran.
