The Province of Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad with an area of 15,563 square kilometers is located in central southwestern Iran. Based on the latest divisions of the country in 1996, the cities of this province are as follows: Kohkilouyeh (with its center as Dehdasht), Boyer Ahmad (with its center as Yasooj) and Gachsaran. Yasooj is the provincial capital. This province is limited in the north by the Province of Chahar Mahal va Bakhtiyari, and in the south are | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

the provinces of Fars and Bushehr. In the east the Province of Esfahan and to the

The
Province of Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad
is a mountainous region. Approximately 45% of it comprises of
hills and mounds and the remaining 15% is in the plain. The
highest point of this province is the Dena summit with a height
of 4.409 meters and the lower part of this area being 500 m.
above sea level. In cold regions the heights are higher, as well
as the mounds. In the warmer regions, these heights are lower.

The
Province of Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad,
in the near past, was one of the districts of Fars Province,
consisting of two parts being the north eastern that was cold
and mountainous and the southwestern sector which had tropical
weather and was formerly called Behbahan Kooh. Till June 23,
1963 a part of the present Province of Kohkilouyeh va Boyer
Ahmad, was affiliated to the Khuzestan Province and a part to
Fars Province. In Nov. 6, 1959, the tropical part of Behbahan
was changed to the township of
Kohkilouyeh with its center as Dehdasht. The same was a
part of Khuzestan Province and the remaining to the Province of
Fars. Following the riot of Boyer Ahmad in July 13, 1963,
Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad was separated from the Fars and

The township of
Boyer Ahmad with its center as Yasooj (the center of province) is
limited to the north by the city of Lordegan (of the Chahar Mahal va
Bakhtiyari Province ), and Semirom(Esfahan Province), to the east
is Eqleed, to the south is Sepeedan and Mamasani (Fars Province) and
in the west it is limited to

Gachsaran | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Gachsaran
is one of the most extreme sections of
Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad Povince.
This section was separated in 1959 from the township of
Behbahan and came under the township of
Kohkilouyeh and recently has
been turned into a township. The petroleum region of
Gachsaran is located in tropical part which has two kinds of
dry and temperate weather. As a result of its oil fields it
is one of the famous centers of petroleum exploitation and
exploration, thus very important. Dogonbadan is the center

This
township is limited in the north by Baq-e-Malek, Eazeh
(Khuzestan Province) and Lordegan (Chahar Mahal va
Bakhtiyari Province) and in the south by
Gachsaran, in the west are
the cities of Behbahan and Ramhormoz (Khuzestan Province)
and in the northeast is
Boyer Ahmad.
This city has two kinds of climate that are quite different.
A cold region and a tropical region provide winter-quarters
for tribes. Sometimes in summer it is even cold in the
summits of the mountains, whereas, warm weather prevails in
the southern areas. This region has lots of mountains, where

| Chas (Lime) Castle, Dehdasht | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The remains
of the Chas Castle are at a distance of 30 km. southwest of
Dehdasht amongst the
Limestone Mountains and are close to the Se Gonbadan
Fire-Temple. This castle is well known as Dar Mahtabi. Due
to its location, it seems to have been held in high esteem

The
construction of these types of castles is related to the sun
worshipping and angel fertility beliefs. The Dokhtar Castles
were usually big and small fire-temples that have been
presented to the angel of fertility and many of them are
reputedly known by the same name in different regions of the
province. Dokhtar Castle, Doshman Ziyari, Dokhtar Kaltak
Torab and Imamzadeh Dokhtar (daughter) Castle, and the
Dokhtar Good Sorkh Castle are the famous castles of this

This castle
is one of the most important castles of Atabakan era of
Lurestan. After segregation of
Kohkilouyeh states from the Fars Province and
annexation of the former to Lurestan Atabakan Afrasiyab,
(688-695) due to encountered pressures, was compelled to
take shelter in this castle. But after the cancellation of
this treaty by Arqoun Khan Mongol (680-690 A.H.), he took
hold of the Mangasht Castle. This castle is within 2 km.
from the Bahmaei Valley, on the common borders of the Janaki

located in Soleiman village 15 km. southwest of the

Amidst the
various mountains standing side by side in
Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad Province,
is a narrow pass or gorge named as Soulak or Sorook. Here
there are three tall columns of stone, engraved with figures
of man from all walks of life in various poses. Each of
these pillars has an archaic epigraph. The Sorook relic has

|
The same is
located in the agricultural lands around the Susa Village of
Gachsaran. It has two pillars
that are very high and are known as Goordopa. According to a
narration these two pillars are the remnants of a fire
temple belong to pre Islamic era. The pillars of this fire
temple resemble the stone pillars of Mehri and Mithraism

These three
fire temples are at a distance of 50 m. from each other.
Moqaddasi has called these effects "Katibeh Alamjous" or the
fire-temple of 'Five Worshippers'. These fire-temples are
located at the skirts of the Limestone Mountains of Tizang.
The architectural effects and internal plaster works are
related to the ancient Iranian period. The local people call
these three domes (Gonbads) as Se Gonbadan, which means

| This relic
is located on the right side of the
Dehdasht - Behbahan Road, and to the left of the
Kheir Abad River and is related to the Sassanid era. This
construction is known as the Kheir Abad Fire Temple. It is a
square shaped structure and has been made of plaster and
slabs of stone. It has four arches at its four sides have
been built on four bases. This fire temple is one of the
archaic and famous fire-temples of Iran. It bears great

| This hill
is located in Dahoveh village of
Gachsaran. Some very beautiful and delicate
earthenwares have been discovered in this area. These
vestiges can be compared to those of Behbahan and
Tal-e-Bakoun of the Fars Province. This hill is probably

| Gerd Hill, Choram | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| This hill
is presently located in the center of Choram city. According
to the Qajar documents, this hill was named as "Tal-e-Gerd
Charam" and "Qaleh Tal-e-Gerd". Above this hill a castle had
been built, the architectural style of which belongs to the
Qajar era. It has tall defense walls towers with plaster

In the old
geographical texts, the present city of
Yasooj was named as Tal-e-
Khosravi. This hillock, which even today is known as Tal-e-
Khosravi, is situated to the south of Yasooj city. Besides
this hillock all other remnants, in present Yasooj have been
gradually ruined by the passage of time. Based on local
narrations, Kaikhosrow had built a castle on this hillock,
from which the yellow brick square shaped remnants can be
still observed. This vicinity dates to the pre-Achaemenian
period and is related to the 3rd millennium B.C. and was
used in 9th and 10th centuries A.H. This hillock is located
at a distance of 4 km. south of Yasooj close to the Tal-e-

This
historical hill is related to the 3rd millennium B.C. and
was used in the 8th to 10th centuries A.H. The same is
located at a distance of 1 km. from the Badangan Village in
northwest of Sisakht en route to Semirom. This site can be
compared to the Shohada hills Dom Chenar, Tal-e-Mohrehie and

The same is
one of the pre-historic hills of the province and belongs to
the 4th and 3rd millennium B.C. from historical value point

At a
distance of 35 km. to the south east of
Kohkilouyeh, between two
parallel mountain ranges, there is a cemetery called Deli
Mehraban or Mehregan. Alongside the old and new cemetery
there are a number of coins discovered related to the Elamit
kings of Khuzestan. The above
mentioned tomb is also located in this vicinity and is known
as the tomb of Amir Lalpa, also called Jamaleddin Omar
Lalpa, one of the commanders of Atabak families. This tomb
is square in shape and constructed of regular sculptured

| Shapour Tomb, Dehdasht | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This tomb
is located in a place that is presently the forest park of
Dehdasht city. This square
shaped grave has been made of stone and gypsum and amongst
local people it is known as the grave of Shapour Sassanid.
The same is in keeping with Belad of Shapour. Due to its new
structural construction, the tomb is said to be related to

Within 9
km. of Kheir Abad and 50 km. of
Gachsaran there are the relics of two ruined bridges
with four arches. The lower bridge has a height of 6.60
meters, but is in a state of ruin; whereas, the effects of
upper bridge of Kheir Abad is more outstanding than the
other. The bridge was about 8m. wide, protected by a 1 m
wall. The construction of this bridge is related to the
early Islamic period and its latest renovation was performed

This bridge
is located within 15 km. of the
Dena
Mountains in upper
Boyer
Ahmad, and has very tall walls which overlook the
river. Due to its climatic and geographical factors it forms
one of the main roads of Tisfoon, Estakhr, Susa, Behbahan,

| Takht-e-Shah Neshin Bridge (Payeh Bridge), Yasooj | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||

This
monument has pillars covered by stone and is related to the
Achaemenian era. It lies on the Behbahan -
Dehdasht - Pataveh Old Road.
It is located at a distance of 1.5 km. of the Pataveh
Village in
Yasooj and 50 km.

This grave
yard is related to the 2nd millennium B.C. and is close to
the Karami village of Sisakht. From historical point of
view, the site is comparable to the pre-historic
archaeological hills in the region. More archaeological
surveys, excavations and studies are required to reach the

In the
Province of Kohkilouyeh va Boyer
Ahmad, remnants such as Naqareh Khaneh can still be
observed. The said are relics from the pre-Islamic era in
Iran. During that period, the drums would come to sound at
sunrise, sunset, and whenever religious anthems were sung.
These locations were especially on elevations, in special
towers on mountains and hillocks. The Naqareh Khaneh of the
tribes was also located on elevations surrounding their
region of settlement, or defense towers which were also at
an altitude, were used for the same purpose. With the
sounding of horns or other instruments, the tribes could be

Imamzadeh
Abdolah is located in Naqareh Khaneh village. Surrounding
this Imamzadeh are ancient graves with engraved tomb stones.
Some of which are engraved with riders on horseback with
swords, symbols such as the sun and stars can be observed
here. Most of the calligraphy on the tombstones is in the
Persian or Arabic scripts. These tombstones also reveal that

The tomb of Bibi Hakimeh is located between Genaveh and Gachsaran. Based on some narrations, this tomb belongs to the daughter of Imam Jafar Sadeq (God up on his name). The tomb was renovated a few years ago. Close to this tomb there is a spring utilized by pilgrims. En route to
Yasooj, beyond the main road
and in the heart of the mountain there is a tomb called
Imamzadeh Pahlevan. It consists of a room with walls and a
dome of gypsum. Close to this Imamzadeh there are some
stones, on which lots of engravings, writings and adornments

In the
ancient city of
Dehdasht,
there are several beautiful architectural relics belonging
to the Safavid period. Amidst the old quarters of the city,
there are a few Imamzadehs with domes that attract the
attention of the on looker. One of these structures is
Imamzadeh Panjeh Khal. The same is a multi storied building
with a beautiful courtyard that has a sculpture in the
center. There is a beautiful inscription on the doorway with
religious verses. The tomb which is in the center of a

| In south
western Dehdasht, there is a
village called Ravaq that is also known as Zorak which
probably is the name of a tribe. This village had a rampart
in past, which was of stone and plaster and some effects of
that are still observed. In this vicinity there is a
pilgrimage site by the name of Seyed Mohammad that is

This tomb
is square in shape and is located at Lishtar west of
Gachsaran. The height of the
walls of tomb is 6 meters and it has a big dome. On the
walls of this Imamzadeh adornments of plaster work and
engravings can be observed and it seems to be one of the

The Kooh
Gol Lake is located to the north of
Boyer Ahmad and in the north eastern part of tourism
city of Sisakht and close to the hills of Kooh Gol. The
location of this lake is in one of the most beautiful parts
of this province which is covered with different types of
wild flowers and lilies. Multiple immigrant birds at the
coast and sides of this lake give an amazing view to this
area. Lots of birds including duck and drake with green
heads, storks and herons along with black cocks give a

This lake
with an altitude of 2180 m. above sea level is located to
the south of Lordegan, close to the border of Chahar Mahal
va Bakhtiyari Province and is at a distance of 180 km.
northwest of
Yasooj. This
lake gains its water from Tang Sib heights and Darbary
Mountains. Ultimately after 10-15 km. it flows into the Moor
Zard Zilaei Lake. Lots of lakes exist in this area. This
lake extends over an area of over 35 hectares and is a

The Province of Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad due to presence of heights along with humid air currents in the two cold and tropic regions has plenty of rainfall. This river
originates from the south east of upper
Boyer Ahmad as well as
Ardakan and Mamasani Mountains in Fars Province and
continues towards the north east of the lower part of Boyer
Ahmad. The major sources of this river are Ganjoun,
Tizab and Tang-e-Sorkh
rivers. After passing through northeastern part, it enters
the Khersan River, where it
joins Karoon River. Here it is known as the river of Barez
that is at the northern slopes of
Dena in the upper Boyer Ahmad and Tayebi areas.

This river
originates from the slopes of Abgarm Kooh Mountains, 25 km.
northeast of Dogonbadan. Then
it runs towards northwest of the Robasht river 28 km.
northeast of Dogonbadan. Here it adjoins with the waters
flowing from northwest. This links up with Taqar River one
km. from Gerdab Village, where it is called Shah Bahram
River. In the southwest where it is already called Kheir
Abad River it joins the Abdil and Bimanjegan rivers and runs

The Khersan
River is the largest tributary of Karoon River and
originates from the Tang-e- Sorkh Mountains 43 km. southeast
of Yasooj and flows under the

Its river
basin is to the west of
Boyer Ahmad
and in a part of the Doshman Ziyari region. The Loadab being
the important branch of the Maroon River which after flowing
through the above mentioned areas, ultimately flows through
the extreme end of
Kohkilouyeh
called Tang-e-Takab, continues towards Behbahan and Ahvaz in
Khuzestan Province and finally under the name of Jarahi
River flows into the Persian Gulf. Areas where the river
takes its source can be considered as wonderful and natural

This river
originates from the heights of
Dena
and enters Yasooj from the pass of the Tangeh waterfall,
located in the north of
Yasooj.
A portion of the water from this river is used for drinking
purposes in the city of Yasooj and the remaining part for
irrigating the lands around Yasooj that joins the
Beshar River of this city.
Alongside the course of this river there is a small and
interesting waterfall, which has created a beautiful scene

takes it source from the mountains that are located at
Tang-e-Goush 14 km. northwestern of Ardakan. After it passes

that was built by Masoud Khane Bashti, is a suitable place
for tourism activities equipped with necessary facilities.
The fertile and virgin lands of Charam, has a high potential
for the cultivation of different kinds of flowers and
plants, in a spectacular manner. This garden is located at
the mouth of the northern mountain and water of the Belqeis
Spring enters this garden. Other springs also enter this
garden. The network of these brooks in keeping with the
architectural layout that leads the waters to a pool is an

This waterfall is
at a distance of 7 km. north of
Gachsaran
and in the slopes of the Khalbiz Mountains. It has a height of 30 m.

is warm in Gachsaran, this area experiences a cold climate. In Benar
village at proximity to this waterfall, there is a place of
pilgrimage (Imamzadeh) which is regularly visited by the native

This famous and
great waterfall is located at the borders of the two provinces of
Kohkilouyeh va Boyer Ahmad and Fars.
This waterfall is at the east of
Yasooj
and alongside the Margoon Village. This long waterfall due to
presence within the beautiful narrow Margoon Pass, and the numerous
water branches which fall in the valley and flow into the river, and
also due to its verdant surroundings and forested trees, is

This
waterfall is a few km. from
Yasooj
city and to the right hand side of the route ending in
Sisakht. It is in a narrow pass. This area is a tourist

beautiful birds in this area and different types of flowers
has changed this area to an attractive region inviting

The Chal Kalaq
Mountain is located 14 km. northeast of
Yasooj. The height of this mountain is 3,531 meters and the
rivers Marber, Mehrian, and Job Khaleh gain their sources here. This
mountain is at the southeast of
Dinar

The Dena or Dinar
mountainous region is in the townships of Brujen, Semirom and
Boyer Ahmad, covering an area of
2,200 square kilometers and comprises of various mountains. The
tallest of them is the well-known Dena (Dinar) summit which has a
height of 4,409 meters and is at a distance of 35 km. northwest of
Yasooj. The Marber, Raigan,
Tal-e-Gordal and Roudeqar Rivers are in the northern slopes of this
region. Water bearing rivers by the names of Benrou, Kahgol, Seris
and Mehrian Rivers are at the southern slopes; whereas Khaleh,
Kashour, Tizab and Dezkord Rivers flow through the southern and
southwestern slopes of this mountain. The northern slopes are
limited to the valley of Marber River, the western slopes to the

The Haami Mountain
is 18 km. northeast of Dogonbadan and
to the west of the Kazangan Village. It is 3,172 meters in height.
The Shah Bahram, Robashti, Abraigon Rivers take their source in this
mountain. It elongates from Kheir Abad River valley located in the
village of Nazmakan and runs towards southeast and continues up to
the Poshte Kooh area. This mountain extends for 54 km. that is from

This mountain is
located within 30 km. northeast of
Dehdasht and to the east of
the Abmahi Village of the
Kohkilouyeh township. It is 3,415 m. high. The
Maroon and Loadab Rivers take
their source from this mountain. This mountain extends from
Maroon River valley located in the east of Andaroon Village
and is limited to the southeastern sector, stretching out
for 43 km. The slopes of this mountain are covered by oak

Mountain is located in the north west of
Yasooj and south west of

This cave is located in
the Kheis Mountain of
Dehdasht and has two large entrances. In the primary
sector of the cave there is a spring with refreshing water

branches inside the cave are blocked. This cave was

This crevice is a natural
cave with a structure related to the Safavid period. The
same is located to the north of Bonzard Village and 50 km.

This cave is located in the
Sarkharab area and was discovered by a group of mountaineers of the
province in 1989. It is assumed that this cave has been known as

This cave is neighboring
the Tourab Village and is located 10 km. from Landeh,
Dehdasht. Half of the internal mouth of this cave is
in Maroon River. This cave has two large halls and is 150
meters deep with lots of branches. In order to pass from
these halls and branches, one should be equipped with enough
technical means and security equipments. This cave was

This cave is in
Kooh-e-Gol, at a distance 20 km. from Sisakht. It is 80
meters in length. This cave has several walls in steps with
various branches, which are very important from the geology
and tourism point of view. The mouth of this cave is 3
meters in height. The ceiling and structure of this cave are
made of calcareous stones with beautiful lantern shaped
hangings. In the depth of this cave there are several
springs with clean, cold water. Evidence for presence of man
around the springs and subterranean canals in surroundings
of this cave shows that it has been utilized not only in the
past but also in recent years. It seems that this cave was

The said cave is located
near the ruins of the ancient city of Shah Bahram, to the

laden with oak trees in the twist and turns of the mountainous paths

The Bahmaei sector with its
center as Kilak comprises of two small villages by the names of
"frontier Bahmaei" and "tropical Bahmaei". The Lirab and Sidoon
Rivers (that join together forming the Aiyla River), are flowing in
this section and enter Jarahi River ultimately. Various springs are
present in this area and grant an outstanding view to this region.
Bahmaei is surrounded by several mountains of which the most
important ones to be mentioned are Siyah Kooh and
Sefid Kooh with a height of
3,124 meters. Bahmaei has a temperate and dry climate. Tang-e-Sorook

The Kheir Abad complex is one of
the most important historical sites in
Gachsaran. This complex consists of a
school, fire temple, castles, and water reservoirs. In addition to
this, a small castle made of stone exists on a mountain, close to
which is one of the ancient temples of Anahita. The Kheir Abad
ancient vicinity is related to the Sassanid period and reveals the
ancient civilization of people of that age. The Kheir Abad comprises
of a complex of villages surrounding the Shirin River. On both sides
of this river, traces of buildings of the Sassanid period can be

Margoon is a part of the
township of
Boyer Ahmad and
is located 24 km. of west of
Yasooj - Brujen Road. The
Saqaveh River passes from its southwestern part. Altitudes
such as the Banar Mountain in the east, Margoon Mountain in
north and Saqaveh in south have surrounded the Margoon
Village. The presence of rivers and springs as well as
mountains, waterfalls, vegetation cover and wildlife has
increased the attractive sites of this village. The
Margoon Waterfall is one of

In order to arrive at the
Maymand Village, the Sisakht route that leads northwards
must be selected. This road passes amongst dense oak forests
providing verdant views and landscapes. The Khersan River
which irrigates rice fields of this village is one of the

Based on the historical
writings, this area was called Belad Shapour in the past and
was founded by Shapour I, the son of Ardeshir Sassanid I.
Based on documents of Fars Nameh-ye- Naseri, it was one of
the ancient cities that has witnessed lots of damages at the
end of the Safavid era, as its trading routes were insecure.
During the Zandieh period, this region faced further decline
and plunder. In this area, historical remnants such as the
water reservoir, Imamzadeh, and a citadel have been
observed. Materials such as gypsum, plaster, lime and
mortar, and stone slabs, have been used in their
construction. The ceiling of the dome of the public bath is
