International Women+s Day

Tehran, March 9, 2010: The world marks the International Women+s Day, recognizing the economic, political and social contribution of women to the global community.

Millions of women celebrate their achievements on March 8th every year by holding various events such as gatherings, film festivals and solidarity marches, presstv.com reported.

This year+s theme announced by the UN is “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all.”

In a new report, the UN has expressed concern about the absence of female voices in Asian-Pacific politics.

The report also says that in many countries, the legal rights of men concerning land, business and financial assets are biased and women are paid between 30 to 40 percent less than men for the same work on average.

The UN reports that the majority of the world+s population living in absolute poverty are women. This is while according to the World Food Program, women are responsible for growing 60 to 80 percent of the food in developing nations and serving as breadwinners in 1 in 3 homes worldwide.

The International Women+s Day has been celebrated since 1911, after leader of Germany+s Women+s Office for the Social Democratic Party Clara Zetkin introduced the idea of setting a day to recognize women at the second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910.
