Ruins of Fortress Found in Behshahr

Bushehr, Iran

Tehran, May 30, 2009: Ruins of an ancient fortress, which is believed to be the first built in Behshahr historical garden, has been identified.

Director of the garden, Abdolvahab Mousavi, told CHTN that the site comprises a tower with the diameter of six meters.

Construction materials like brick and mortar were used in construction of building. However, the materials were moved to the villages in the vicinity of site for making mosque and bathrooms during the Qajar era and now only a foundation of structure remains.

Behshahr is a city close to Sari, the capital of Mazandaran province.

It is approximately a 45-minute drive from Sari by car. The name Behshahr literally means Heaven city. Behshahr is an industrial city famous for its vegetable oil production.

After recent excavations near the suburbs of Behshahr, an ancient town was discovered which included nearly a thousand corpses of children to middle-aged men. The corpses had heights above the modern typical average. In the area, gold and jars were also found.

Behshahr historical garden is among the most outstanding in Iranian gardens and were revived by Shah Abbas (1587-1629) of the Safavid Dynasty.

The unique complex includes residential quarters that were used by the Safavid rulers.
