Archeologists have traced existence of one historical site in every 10 square kilometer during preparing the archeology map of Sistan va Baluchestan province, southeastern Iran.

Tehran, 27 June 2007 (CHN Foreign Desk) – Based on discovered evidence, Sistan va Baluchestan University which is in charge of preparing the archeology map of Sistan district of this historic province, anticipates that some 1000 historical site would be pinpointed on this archeology map.
Announcing this news, Reza Mehrafarin, director of archeology department of Sistan University and head of the team for preparing the map told CHN: “Sistan is one of important archeological sites in the country and initial estimations during preparing the first phase of the archeology map in an area about 600 to 700 square kilometers revealed that one historical site must have existed in each 10 square kilometer.”
According to Mehrafarin, all these historical sites will be registered and by referring to this map on which all historical sites will be pinpointed all organizations would have the chance to organize their developing activities before bringing them into force.
Until now some 70,000 US Dollars have been allocated to this project which has come into force by joint cooperation of Iran’s Archeology Research Center and University of Sistan.
Mehrafarin further explained that surveying method will be implemented in this project and the archeology students of Sistan University along with geography and mapping students will cooperate in this project during which they will try to prepare the topographic and urban maps of the identified historical sites.
The historic province of Sistan va Baluchestan located in southeast Iran is comprises of two sections, Sistan in the north and Baluchestan in the south. According to the epigraphs of Bisotun and Persepolis, Sistan was one of the eatern territories of Darius the Great, the Achaemenid King. Kuh-e Khwajeh (Khwajeh Mountain) is believed to be the most famous archeological site in Sistan which is located in the middle of Lake Hamun.
