Wrap up session of joint workshop of CHN & UNESCO

The joint workshop of UNESCO AND CHN on "Globalization, Conflict and Cultural Heritage: The Role of the Media in Introducing and Protecting Cultural Heritage" came to an end with the publication of a Declaration of the Media and Cultural Heritage and Diversity in Islamic Countries.

 Tehran, 7 September 2006(CHN Foreign desk) - Declaration of the Media and Cultural Heritage and Diversity in Islamic Countries published yesterday at the end of joint workshop of UNESCO and CHN. The full text of this declaration is as follows:
 We journalists of OIC countries gathered in Tehran on the 5-6 September 2006, Recognizing that cultural property has suffered grave damage during recent armed conflicts and as result of natural disasters, rapid urbanization, building dams, high ways, airports, pipelines and illegal digging and looting of historical, cultural and religious heritage sites,
Recognizing that globalization and development of information and communication technologies can present threat to cultural diversity as well as an opportunity for dialogue among civilizations and the sharing of information about historical, cultural and religious heritage,
Recognizing that both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and the diversity that it supports are a common heritage of humanity and a living renewable treasure,
Recognizing the central role that women can play in sustaining historical, cultural and religious heritage and diversity,
Recognizing the vital role of the mass media in supporting cultural diversity and protecting historical, cultural and religious heritage,
Guided by the principles concerning the protection of cultural property during armed conflicts, as articulate in the Hague Convention of 1954 and its two Protocols of 1954 and 1999, and by UN Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Society of 2000 and by the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity of 2001
Have agreed on the following provisions:

1.To establish a Network of Cultural Heritage Journalists of OIC Countries to exchange information and ideas on historical, cultural and religious heritage, cultural diversity and the specific role of women as well, without restrictions,

2.This network shall seek support from UNESCO and other appropriate national, regional and international bodies for professional training and the provision of information and other resources to support media initiatives to:

-         Raise public awareness about historical, cultural and religious heritage, cultural diversity and the role of the women in sustaining historical, cultural and religious heritage and diversity and to reflect community initiatives to protect historical, cultural and religious heritage from destruction and looting at national, regional and international levels,
-         Raise public awareness about the specific legal instruments and international conventions governing cultural diversity, historical, cultural and religious heritage and the role of women in sustaining cultural heritage and diversity at national, regional and international levels,
-         Raise public awareness about the role that globalization and the development of information and communication technologies can play in both destroying cultural diversity as well as providing an opportunity for dialogue among civilizations and the exchange of information about cultural heritage,

3.This Network shall seek support from UNESCO and other appropriate national, regional and international bodies to hold an annual Conference in OIC Countries to discuss issues of mutual concern in the fields of cultural heritage, cultural diversity and the role of women in sustaining historical, cultural and religious heritage and diversity.
