Sialk Rural Houses and a 7500 Years of History Behind

Stratigraphical works on the northern hill of Sialk revealed its ancient history which goes back to thousands of years ago.
Tehran, 24 December 2005 (CHN) -- Stratigraphical works on the northern hill of Sialk indicate that the hill is more than 10 meters in height and the inhabitants of this historical hill constructed their dwellings in the villages which were established there some 7500 yeas ago.

Sialk historical tepe is the first historical hill which has been excavated by the archaeologists. It was excavated for the first time in 1933 by Roman Grishman, the French archaeologists. During his excavations, Grishman unearthed a giant structure which he called the brick structure of Sialk. He provided a comprehensive report from his observations and excavations in Sialk Tepe which were published later. The revising project of Sialk Tepe was started 5 years ago by the archaeologists of the Archaeological Research Center of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization of Iran and will end its work in March 2006.

“The northern hill of Sialk which contains the oldest settlements of this historical site has been studied during this season of excavation,” said Sadegh Malek Shahmirzadi, head of revising team of Sialk historical tepe.

“This stratigraphy work indicates that the inhabitants of this historical hill had rural residencies 7500 years ago. Since then and until the first millennium BC Sialk was the residential area of many ethnic groups,” added Shahmirzadi.

Two years ago, a stratigraphy wall was made in the southern part of the Sialk tepe which reached to pure soil in the depth of 14 meters. This was a proof that the settlements of human beings in Sialk historical site were extended from north to the south of the hill.

Since Sialk Tepe is now located inside the perimeters of Kashan city and many residential houses surround it, the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization of Iran has presented a project to clear up the Sialk area.

Sialk Tepe, located in Kashan city, dates back to more than 8000 years ago and is one of the most important historical sites of Iran.
