Excavation works in the city of golden vessels Jorjan will continue this year. This historical and cultural city, which was constructed in seventh century A.D., used to be a flourished settlement housing various ethnic groups up to 14th century. Jorjan, a post-Islamic city, is an important spot because of its golden vessels.
This historical city, which has been buried in the course of time due to different reasons, was first excavated in 1970©s by Mohammad Yousef Kiyani. But unfortunately, this site and its excavation workshops were left unprotected until 1984-85 when the works were reseumed.
Meanwhile, the new season of excavation works in Jorjan has started since Dec. 1. Mohammad Mortezaei, an archeological expert and head of the second season excavation works in Jorjan said: "This historical and cultural spot has been excavated systematically once in 1970©s and its perimeter was set in 1985.In 2000, the restoration plan of this site was prpared by Mohammad Rakavandi; after that the new season of excavation has restarted since last year, aiming to survey the northern town of Gonbad-e Kavous with the centrality of Jorjan and discovering other localities which were coexisted with this district in different historical ages.Meanwhile, the archeological excavations of the glasswork workshops as well as surveying the structure of the residential and industrial areas in the vicinity of the workshops are among the priorities of this excavation season."
As for the findings of the excavations in 2002, Mortezaei said: "In this season which was the first season of the scientific excavations after the Islamic Revolution, the survey process was conducted in two locations: i.e. Gorgan Roud and Chehel Chay rivers which both had a strategic and significant role in the historical formation and development of Jorjan. The investigations resulted in discovering three bridges in south, west and northwest parts of this historical site as well as the remnants of terracotta and relics dating back to the pre-Islamic era.The excavation team has also discovered the remnants of a glasswork workshop in Jorjan where the archeological excavations will be continued during the new season. The important point is that no glasswork workshop had been found in an Islamic site as yet, thus this is the first time that such a workshop is being excavated.According to the findings, the glass kiln is dated back to the Saljuks era."
He further added that remainings of a passage, covered by bricks beautifully and in a well-arranged style, has also been discovered.Remnants of terracotta and glass vessels, human bodies, golden vessels, coins and lion-shaped metal relics are among the discoveries of this season.
