Fabrizio Ago an official with the Foreign Ministry of Italy, accompanied by a team of experts, paid a visit to Iran recently to pave the way toward the setting up of the first standard museum in Iran.

Next comes his exclusive interview with CHN:

What is Italy’s goal in carrying out the project of Iran’s National Museum expansion?

Iran and Italy have had long standing cooperation in various areas. Following the vast cultural exchanges in the area of cultural heritage in the recent years, initiated by the Italian Foreign Ministry, talks were held on renovating Iran’s National Museum. The Ministry was assigned to take care of the project’s financial and practical aspects.
Right now, only one storey of the museum is used and a large part of the valuable items are held in storage, and the project aims to run all storeys of the building to showcase some six thousand items.
The project is a cultural one and Italy, who is in possession of the most improved methods for museum arrangements, will provide Iran with the latest techniques in the area.

Last year another Italian delegation visited the National Museum. What were the results of that trip on the cooperation?

The delegation included some experts from the Foreign Ministry, who came to carry out a primary assessment of the necessary budget for the design project. They came up with a 700,000-euro amount, which was approved by the Italian government.
Also the specialties for the project were identified based on the conditions of the museum, which included architects, experts for interior design, arrangement of items, providing the showcases, planning for air condition systems, providing electronic and other surveillance systems, and organizing a databank.

Which of the experts are now accompanying you?

Right now heads of the architectural, interior design, and item arrangement teams and historians are in Iran for the primary studies. And since there are also Iranian experts in the areas, the project will be carried out cooperatively.

What is Italy’s experience in renovating museums?

We possess the most developed technology in the area, and so far, we have designed twenty museums around the world by the same method we are using here.

Besides the fortification of the building against earthquake, do you have any plans for preserving the showcased items?

Items of the showcases will be arranged in a way that even in the case an earthquake and the shaking of the building they won’t move. Right now, Italy is the best in making museum showcases.

What would be the preservation activities?

They include the preservation of items against natural disasters such as earthquake, against human dangers such as theft and fire, and against weather pollutions, light, heat and the chemical compounds.

What is the idea of the Italian experts about the current conditions of Iran’s National Museum?

Iran’s National Museum includes some 300,000 historical items, which makes it one of the best and richest museums in the world. However, it is far from the standard conditions and the maintenance and showcasing methods have not much improved since its construction more than fifty years ago. Anyhow, the collection is considered a rich one for archeological studies and those of the Ancient Iran, therefore deserving improvement.
